Review | One True Loves – Taylor Jenkins Reid

🌟🌟🌟🌟

“You can’t capture love in a bottle. You can’t hold on to it with both hands and force it to stay with you.”

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

The synopsis sums up the entirety of the book.

“I am who I am because I loved you once.”

This was an emotional and thought-provoking story about a woman who has to figure out who she is and who/what she feels is right for her.

“True love doesn’t always last. It doesn’t always have to be for a lifetime.”

When her husband, Jesse, comes back she is torn between the love of life then and the love of her life now, Sam, her fiancee. Jesse doesn’t like the new Emma, he doesn’t like all the changes she’s done in the three years he’s been gone. She’s become a completely different person than she was when she was with Jesse.

“I had predicated my life on the idea that I wanted to see everywhere extraordinary, but I’d come to realize that extraordinary is everywhere.”

Who will Emma choose? Read this book, take the journey with Emma and have tissues ready. OTL is a must read.

Souls Unfractured by Tillie Cole -Review

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Torturous Soul Stars

Labeled a ‘Cursed’ woman of Eve from birth, Maddie has endured nothing but pain and repression at the hands of The Order’s most abusive elder, Moses. Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free. Free from the suffocating faith she no longer believes in. Free from endless years of physical and mental torment.

Just… free…

At age twenty-one, the timid and shy Maddie is content to live within the confines of her new home—safe from the outside world, safe from harm and, strangely, protected by the Hangmen’s most volatile member; the heavily pierced and tattooed, Flame.

Flame.

The man who ceaselessly watches over her with his midnight dark and searing eyes. The man who protects her with a breath-taking intensity. And the man who stirs something deep within her numbed heart.

But when circumstances conspire for Flame to need HER help, Maddie bravely risks it all for the broken man who has captivated her fragile soul.

The Hangmen’s most infamous member, Flame, is ruled by one thing—anger. Plagued by haunting demons from his past, an all-consuming rage, and isolated by an abhorrent hatred of being touched, Flame’s days are filled with suffocating darkness, pierced only by a single ray of light—Maddie. The shy, beautiful woman he cannot purge from his thoughts. The woman he has an overwhelming need to possess…
… the only person who has ever been able to touch him.

Flame’s mission in life is to protect Maddie, to keep her safe. Until a trigger from his troubled past sends him spiraling into madness, trapping him in the deepest recesses of his disturbed mind.

His Hangmen brothers fear that Flame is beyond saving.

His only hope of salvation: Maddie and her healing light.

Therapy may be needed after this reading; this book is not for the faint of heart. Tillie Cole once again touches subjects that make you ache for these characters. She also gives us glimpses of her other characters that will be getting their own novels as well. Tillie doesn’t disappoint, she will make you feel every emotion within you.

“We are Flame and Maddie. And we have survived.”

Souls Unfractured is the third book in the Hades Hangmen Series, following Maddie and Flame, the surrounding plots are a continuation of It Ain’t Me, Babe and Heart Recaptured.

“I used to wonder how two people – one broken girl, and one broken boy – could ever move on from their dark and tortured pasts. But now I know. Together, that’s how. They fight their way through… together.”

I highly recommend this book as well as the Hades Hangmen series. Keep a look out for Prophet Cain/Rider’s book, Deep Redemption, which will be releasing July 12th 2017.

The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith Review

🌟🌟🌟 Maybe/Hopeful Stars

Eden was always good at being good. Band geek. Book nerd. Starting high school didn’t change that.

But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s whole world capsizes. What was once simple, is now complex. What Eden once loved—who she once loved—she now hates. What she believed was the truth, now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she’s never felt so alone in her life. She knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened. But she can’t.

So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

There are no other character developments. Her relationships with her family and friends are one-dimensional and those characters all blend into the background. There are a fair number of loose ends and some plot threads that could have been better developed.

We see Edy proceed on a downward spiral towards sex, drugs and self-hatred. The novel’s major selling point is that it looks at the aftereffects of rape over four years.

“All these maybes swimming around in my head make me think that ‘maybe’ could just be another word for hope.”

**The author’s resource note at the end and include the free hotline for the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network: 1-800-656-HOPE. If you need someone, please know help is available and confidential.**

Dirty Promises by Karina Halle -Review

Dark, Gritty, Sexy

DIRTY PROMISES continues with Javier and Luisa’s story. These two are not your typical couple, but what can you expect from a drug lord and his queen…

If you believe that you can find a happy ending when you are living in a world where pain, violence, and the thirst of blood & power are your everyday things, turn around because this is not the way. Dirty Promises is not full of rainbows or unicorns, but of betrayal; it is a love story written in blood, where loyalty can be bought. When you are part of the cartel drug world, trust, is something really hard to find and keep.

Alcohol was my partner while reading this book, this is the type of book where you find scenes that are going to leave you speechless, so you will need something to give you support. There might even be people who will feel ashamed for loving this book, but I am not one of those people.

I developed a strong bond with the characters and the story line because I’m Mexican and it was fascinating to read the way Karina describes their lives in Mexico. Reading her words knowing that everything I was reading was true, God, it was kind of shocking. I mean, those things happen in my country and no one gives a shit about it. Karina did excellent research, everything she put into this book, described perfectly what happens in Mexico. The details of each scene, the behavior of the characters, every-fucking-thing. With this, I’m saying that Dirty Promises is utterly realistic.

I fell in love with Javier in the Artists Trilogy and in this series he took my heart and carved up his name on my back. He was unfaithful and murderous, but my loyalty remains the same. My queen Luisa, such a feisty woman, she is by far one of my favorite heroines ever. She has been through so much already and things just get worse for her. Their relationship is not as easy as you would think, it is full of pain. After some events that took place in Dirty Deeds, Javier tried to push Luisa away and she almost lost the battle. Things got complicated and dirty and they both do things to hurt each other and that maybe in the end will destroy them.

There were moments when I just wanted to scream because the feelings were too much, the rage, the sadness, the pain. I was heart broken, a complete mess of emotions.
Dirty Promises was extraordinarily amazing and I loved every word.

Arsen by Mia Asher -Review

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Heart Grabbing, Consuming Stars

One glance was all it took…

I’m a cheater.
I’m a liar.
My whole life is a mess.

I love a man.
No, I love two men…
I think.

One makes love to me. The other sets me on fire.
One is my rock. The other is my kryptonite.

I’m broken, lost, and disgusted with myself.

But I can’t stop. This is my story.
My broken love story.

Tears were wept. Gasps escaped. Eyes were covered. Hands were held over hearts. I’m in so much pain, my heart hurts. Mia Asher has crawled into my heart and taken a piece of it with her.

*Arsen is not a book for everyone. The choices that Cathy makes in this book, not all would agree with.*

This book is written so perfectly on point; real and emotional. I enjoy reading books that are similar to real life, I think to myself ‘those events do happen’ and this story is most definitely one of real life. I felt every emotion that Cathy did, every questionable thought she had, every action. Enter Ben’s POV every so often and you love the man, he’s the perfect, genuine, loving husband. And then Mia gives you a glimpse into Arsen’s POV and the guy is selfish, evil in the sense that he doesn’t care if he comes between a marriage, but heart breaking.

Damn you Mia Asher. I continued sobbing about an hour after I finished reading this book. I held it to my chest, I stared at it, looking for solace. They say some stories stay with us forever, Arsen will definitely stay with you. This book will swallow you up heart and soul.

YOU by Caroline Kepnes -Review

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Engine Number Nine Stars

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

We’re currently in an “everythingship” with YOU by Caroline Kepnes, an absolutely brilliant, well-written book. The story is told from the perspective of anti-hero Joe Goldberg. He’s obsessive, charming and manipulative…and we couldn’t help but like the guy and cheer for him.

“The problem with books is that they end.”

The object of his affection, Guinevere Beck, is an attention-seeking narcissist. But to Joe, Beck was perfect, everything he was looking for. But is the Beck he sees the real Beck or just another role she’s playing in one of her manipulative games?

“Happiness is believing that you’re gonna be happy. It’s hope.”

The pop culture references Kepnes uses throughout the book really set it apart and make it special. They intrigued us and had us running to our bookshelves or turning to YouTube every time  Joe would drop one of these gems.

“If you knew what I went through to get into your home, that I messed up my back trying to know you, inside and out, you’d judge me for it.”

YOU is not a book for everyone. Joe will have you feeling a bit unsettled, constantly looking over your shoulder. You never know who may be watching.

“You are a woman and I am a man and we belong in the dark together.”
